I got up this morning at my hotel in Eureka, the SureStay by Best Western. It was a nice place, but, like many hotels today, its breakfast left a lot to be desired.
I started the day exploring Eureka a little bit. Here are some photos that I took of the downtown area, and also on a road leading up into the hills above town…
The Eureka County Courthouse was built in 1879 at a cost of $38,000 which was a lot of money for that time. It was quite an imposing structure, and still is today. Eureka had the most developed lead and silver mines in the country then. So there was a lot of money flowing through the area.

Another monumental structure for such a small town was built with the same money at about the same time. This is the Eureka Opera house where I saw the fiddle contest yesterday.
I was curious to see a mining operation, so I drove on a road that led up into the hills just above the town. I came across a fabulous view of the enormous valley leading up to the town. Notice the snow-capped mountains in the second photo below. That was from yesterday. I dodged a bullet coming over one of those passes just before the storm.
And here are two scenes of the previous mining operations at the end of that road above Eureka.

I am in Ely Nevada now, holed up at the Nevada Club for my lodgings.
